Best time to visit Zanzibar at a glance

There is no single winning month. Dry weather and good wind are different things, and the months with the right wind for kitesurfing are not always right for snorkeling or swimming. Decide what matters most, then use the windows below.

Zanzibar has a long rainy season, Masika, from March to May and a short one, Vuli, from October to December. January and February are relatively dry, and June to September is the drier part of the year. Relatively dry months are not rain-free. If your main plan is the water, look at Zanzibar snorkeling and boat trips once your dates are set.

For most beach holidays, January and February or June to September are the usual starting point. Choose by wind if you kitesurf, and read about Paje and kitesurfing for the south-east coast.

Jozani and the caves of the south are a good day out when the sea is rough or the beach is in seaweed season.

Zanzibar in December

December belongs to the short rainy season, Vuli, which runs from October to December. A popular holiday month is not the same as a dry month, so do not count on cloudless days or calm seas for the holidays.

The Kaskazi wind typically sets in around late December, which suits kitesurfers. If you travel over the holidays, book accommodation and key trips early, and keep a spare day for weather. You can read the monthly air temperatures on the Zanzibar weather page: 28.0 ยฐC is the December mean.

Season by season

What each stretch of the year means for your plans.

January and February

Relatively dry and among the warmest months, with mean air temperatures of 28.5 ยฐC. The Kaskazi wind typically runs until mid-March.

March to May

Masika, the long rains. Expect more cloud and more rain, and plan flexible days.

June to September

The drier part of the year and the main window for the Kusi wind. Evenings can feel cooler, with mean air temperatures near 25 to 26 ยฐC.

October to December

Vuli, the short rains. Vuli covers October to December, so do not treat October as a safe dry month.

Ramadan and your travel dates

The fasting month moves each year.

Ramadan began on 19 February 2026. In 2027 it is expected to begin around 8 February, and that date is provisional until the local announcement. During the fasting month, plan for a quieter pace in villages and be considerate when eating or drinking in public. Ask your accommodation and tour operator what changes for your dates.

The seasons are averages. Individual weeks can look different, so keep some flexibility for boat trips.

Mosquito protection all year

Malaria risk exists all year on Zanzibar and Pemba. Talk to a doctor before you travel.

Where to stay

Coasts differ in how far the water drops at low tide, which matters for swimming as much as the month does. Compare the areas before you book.
